Discover the Dark Skies of the Cairngorms National Park and learn more about the night sky with the help of a qualified Star Ranger. The Cairngorms National Park is recognised as one of the best places in the world for stargazing, due to its dark skies.
Our minibus offers pickups from Peterculter, Banchory, Aboyne, and Ballater, transporting you to the Muir of Dinnet National Nature Reserve. From there, you’ll walk through the forest to a clearing north of Loch Kinord, which offers unobstructed views of both the southern and northern skies. You may even be lucky enough to witness the Aurora or capture the moon's reflection on the loch.
A Dark Skies presentation will be given near the visitor centre, with hot drinks provided. Astronomical twilight will allow us to point out the planets, constellations, and star clusters. If it's overcast, some constellations will be covered in the presentation.
Your guide for this experience, Garry, is a qualified Mountain Leader and First Aider, having completed a “Star Ranger” course. He will be delighted to share his knowledge of the night sky. Garry is also very familiar with the area and can share local history and nature facts.
